Repeat Sentence: The Memory Trick That Makes This Task Easier
I’ll be honest with you: Repeat Sentence (RS) is the one task that makes my students’ palms sweat the most. You’re staring at a blank screen, a voice speaks a sentence you’ve never heard, and two seconds later, you have to say it back perfectly.
The biggest myth about RS is that you need a “photographic memory” to succeed. You don’t. I’ve coached students with terrible memories who still scored a 90 in Speaking. They didn’t have better brains; they had a better technique.
The Chunking Technique: 3–5 Word Groups
If you try to memorize a sentence word-by-word, your brain will likely “clutter” and dump the information halfway through. Instead, you need to use Chunking. This is the process of breaking a 12-word sentence into three “meaning units.”
Example Sentence:
“The university library will stay open until midnight during the exam period.”

Wrong way (Word-by-word): The… university… library… (Your brain is already full).

By remembering three logical “chunks,” you reduce the mental load. You aren’t remembering 12 items; you’re remembering 3.
The Shadowing Practice Method
How do you get better at this? You use a method called Shadowing. This means listening to a speaker and repeating the sentence immediately after they finish, attempting to copy their exact speed, rhythm, and intonation.
How to Shadow properly:

Listen with 100% focus: Close your eyes if it helps.

Mime the rhythm: Even if you miss a word, keep the “beat” of the speaker’s voice.

Repeat aloud: Don’t just whisper; say it clearly for the microphone.
Spend 15 minutes a day shadowing academic podcasts or PTE practice audios. This trains your “echoic memory” to hold onto sounds longer.
The Recovery Strategy: What to Do When You Miss a Word
Here is a secret that most students don’t know: PTE scoring rewards fluency more than perfect word accuracy.
If you miss a word or forget the end of a sentence:

DO NOT STOP. A silence longer than 3 seconds will kill your recording.

DO NOT RESTART. Correcting yourself destroys your fluency score.

KEEP GOING. If you remember 60–70% of the sentence and deliver it smoothly with good pronunciation, you can still get a very high score.
If you fumbled, just guess a word that fits the context or jump straight to the next chunk. The AI rewards the “flow” of your speech.
Your 7-Day “Sentence Master” Plan
Don’t try to master 15-word sentences on Day 1. Use this progressive plan:

Final Tip: Repeat Sentence is about confidence. If you speak like you know exactly what you’re saying—even if you missed a word—the AI will be much kinder to your score.
